Feud is a new translation and telling of Vicente Blasco Ibáñez‘s La Barraca by Ali Villaverde. The fictional drama is set in 1887 on the plains near Valencia. Batiste Borrull and his family are decent, hard-working peasants, Christians like the others around them who share the irrigation canals to fight the drought and protect the harvest. A decade ago, a feud kind of cursed the plot of land Batiste now is trying to cultivate again.
The narrative follows the naturalism of late 19th century writers. Despite all human efforts and conditions like a waiver to pay rent for two years, there are higher powers at work that may destroy whatever you build and bring adversaries in unexpected places. A corrupt court, tragic deaths, quicksand you cannot escape from, bitterness and hate.
