In de aanloop naar het concert van MARINA in november 2019 maakte ik ook kennis met de synth pop van support act Allie X (haar echte naam is Alexandra Ashley Hughes). Het schrijven en opnemen van haar vierde studioalbum, Cape God, was achter de rug. In de afgelopen maanden werden diverse singles (Fresh Laundry, Rings a Bell, Regulars, Love Me Wrong met de Australische acteur en singer-songwriter Troye Sivan en Devil I Know) uitgebracht om ons lekker te maken voor een nieuw popalbum met een duister randje. Het thema op Cape God is namelijk ontleend aan de HBO documentaire Heroin: Cape Cod USA uit 2015, waarin het drugsgebruik onder jongeren in dorpen en steden aan de Amerikaanse oostkust – rond het schiereiland Cape Cod – voor het voetlicht gebracht werd.
De Canadese Allie X (1985) gebruikt de hoofdpersonen uit de documentaire en haar eigen opvoeding in Ontario en het noordwesten van Michigan. “Though I’ve never done junk and don’t plan on trying it, in an abstract way I found myself relating to the film’s young interviewee’s. I’ve never spoken much publicly about this, but during high school, I was in and out of the hospital with physical illness. Often debilitatingly sick. To say it shaped my adolescence is an understatement. In multiple ways I related to the characters I saw in the documentary. Going into these feelings I had as a teenager was the perspective I chose to write this album from. It happened very naturally and without much thought – it became “Cape God”. I would say Cape God is a liminal space I created to explore my repressed feelings and perhaps create a different outcome. While in cape god, you are in limbo. You stay there until you die or come to life and while you are there you are somewhere in between.”
Het leidt tot indringende teksten als “You said you’re always on my side. But what if my side has changed too much? Then tell me, who am I? (Oh) You said you’re always on my side. But what if my side has lived too long? Something has to die. Who am I?” (Fresh Laundry)
Muzikaal zit het dozijn door OZGO (de Noor Oscar Michael Görres die als lid van het Max Martin team ook voor MARINA, Taylor Swift, Maroon 5, DNCE, Britney Spears, Tove Lo en Pink! werkt) geproduceerde liedjes goed in elkaar. Toegankelijke synth pop in een fris, eigentijds jasje en zonder de obligate hang naar de ’80. De klassiek geschoolde zangeres toont haar vocale kwaliteiten in meezingers als Sarah Come Home, de oorwurm Rings a Bell en de new R&B in June Gloom. Volg de vette bas en trek je benen bij van links naar rechts in Super Duper Party People. Mitski zingt mee in het mid-tempo Susie Save Your Love.
