After Management 3.0 and How to Change the World, Jurgen Appelo is back with a series of principles, tools & practices, and inspirational thoughts to replace bad management by better management. Management 3.0 Workout, available in a free text edition, design edition, ebook, … and paper. There is no shortage of ideas. There is a shortage of commitment to making them happen. Appelo’s transparent about his sources, and the intention to ‘steal & tweak ideas’. You may view this book as a reflection of current management literature, thinkers and speakers’ take on do’s and dont’s in management. Human factors as attitude, motivation, leadership, personal development are reviewed and reframed in a complex world and foremost humans, not machines to manage. Practices such as rewards (salary, bonus, other tokens of appreciations), planning and progress tracking of productivity, office hours, merits, etc. get attention. Dashboards, data analysis, stakeholder analysis & engagement and organizational culture (symbols, rituals, titles, roles) are explored. Appelo offers games & tools with attractive names like a Kudo Box, Exploration Day, Personal Map, Merit Money, Celebration Grids, Champfrogs checklist and Moving Motivators to engage people, learn, celebrate, earn good money, measure merits & influence, and understand personal values and goals. Like a traditional workout: it may sound easy, it all begins with a first step. Don’t look to others or blame the system. If you believe that transformations can happen and the world can be changed, show your personal transformation. Sounds easy, as Jurgen admits as well. Focus and lots of exercising are necessary to delight clients, and become the workplace you’re happy…..even with management!
About the author
Jurgen Appelo calls himself a creative networker, although others would call him a writer, speaker, trainer, entrepreneur, illustrator, manager, blogger, reader, dreamer, leader, freethinker, or… Dutch guy. According to his own biased metrics, he is the most popular management & leadership writer across continental Europe. Since 2008 Jurgen writes a popular blog at NOOP.NL, covering the creative economy, modern leadership, and personal development. He is the author of the book Management 3.0, which describes the role of the manager in agile organizations. And he wrote the little book How to Change the World, which describes a supermodel for change management. Jurgen is CEO of the business network Happy Melly, and co-founder of the Agile Lean Europe network and the Stoos Network. He is also a speaker who is regularly invited to talk at business seminars and conferences around the
world. After studying Software Engineering at the Delft University of Technology, and earning his Master’s degree in 1994, Jurgen Appelo has busied himself starting up and leading a variety of Dutch businesses, always in the position of team leader, manager, or executive. Jurgen has experience in leading a horde of 100 software developers, development managers, project managers, business consultants, service managers, and kangaroos, some of which he hired accidentally. Nowadays he works full-time managing the Happy Melly ecosystem,
developing innovative courseware, books, and other types of original content. But sometimes Jurgen puts it all aside to spend time on his ever-growing collection of science fiction and fantasy literature, which he stacks in a selfdesigned book case. It is 4 meters high. Jurgen lives in Rotterdam (The Netherlands) — and in Brussels (Belgium) — with his partner Raoul. He has two kids, and an imaginary hamster called George.
