Currently, I’m in the writing process of a book on project management illustrated with long distance walking experiences. I was glad to discover Gordon Tredgold’s new book Leadership: It’s a Marathon, Not a Sprint, illustrating leadership principles with his personal challenge to start running at age 52 in order to complete a full marathon 26 weeks later!
Outstanding results that can be attained by taking single achievable steps. Eating the elephant in small pieces. Tredgold devotes each of the 26 miles that make up a full marathon to small chapters concentrating on a leadership trait, principle or practice. Ranging from “plan, plan, execute the plan”, commitment, the need of followers, compliments and celebrate successes to the importance of having a mission and goal to accomplish.
20 years of learning, not only professionally, but also in previous sports Gordon was involved in, as well as examples from British soccer teams are offered in an easy to read and comprehend format. Quotes and proverbs, most of them well known from other leadership books, some of them genuine and fresh, are another way of highlighting principles. To get sustainable results, you must learn to endure, understand the effects of (spiritual and natural) food, your breathing and how satisfying finishing is.
