Maruwan Gasant – Night of the Dogs

Maruwan Gasant's first novel NIGHT OF THE DOGSMaruwan Gasant brought his first novel, Night of the Dogs to my attention. This historical family sage about a 48 years cycle of accidents, strange deaths in South Africa, both past and present. The alternating rulers, whether it were the Boers, British, former slaves, whites or ‘coloured’. You reap what you sow. A lengthy South African Saga of love lust, murder, dreams and deceptions, hope, and lots of black pages in the collective memories. Religion, angst, exploring unknown countries, lots of ingredients to prepare a great story.

At 47% of the 685 pages I stopped reading. The lack of real conversations, the many assumptions laid in single sentences spanning decades and the numerous characters introduced in this book, could keep my attention. The 48 years cycle was too obvious, and where South African history must be an inspiration for all kinds of psychological novels, lessons, memoirs and statements of hope.
