Life is fun, a celebration and then, suddenly it’s not so much fun anymore. Angie, has a very good friend, Kitty who is happily married to Michael and has two kids Eva and Charlie. At her 32nd birthday they all have a very good time: lots of presents and laughter. Then fate hits: Kitty has an undiagnosed hartdisease. She gets a heart attack and dies. Understandably, everyone is very sad.
Ten months later, the story continues. Michael has a leave of absence from his work and tries to make up for the loss of their mommy. But he can’t get over his grief, and, unwillingly, neglects the children and their needs. Angie is a goldsmith and always stood by the family. She confronts Michael and they get in a heated argument. After a while, Michael admits life has to change. He arranges daycare and a baby-sitter and returns to work. Then Michael and Angie both discover they start to have feelings for one another. They try not to give in, but after a while, it’s inavoidable. Especially Michael feels very guilty. He feels he betrayes his deceased wife, whom he loved very much.
Sarah Mayberry was inspired to write this Harlequin superromance title Within Reach after hearing stories about post 9/11 romances in New York. She was very intrigued about rescue workers who adopted a widow or family of a fallen comrade. Not surprisingly, in that kind of circumstances, relations are quite different. And indeed, although this is not a masterpiece in writing, she did get that right. It was a nice book to read, if you like love stories. At some points somewhat far fetched, but what book is perfect. I liked it!
