Lang werd uitgezien naar het achtste album van de populaire Amerikaanse rockband Switchfoot. Zanger en voorman Jon Foreman (what’s in a name) kwalificeert Vice Verses als “a record of tension and release. It’s an attempt to describe the polarity of the human experience. The sunlight and shadow. The highs and lows, laughter and pain, hope and fear, doubts and belief” Hoewel op handen gedragen dus terug naar de menselijke maat: “Vice Verses is soul music – attempting to get to the heart of the human experience: Living in the tension and turning it into song.” Vice Verses werd in juni via een 6-song sampler (Afterlife, The Original, The War Inside, Restless, Selling The News en Dark Horses) al in de week gelegd bij het publiek. Dark Horses en Restless waren al eerder uitgebrachte singles van het 27 september in z’n geheel verschenen album.
Het door Neal Avron (Weezer, Linkin Park) en Mike Elizondo (Eminem, Regina Spektor) geproduceerde album opent met het stevige Afterlife. “I’ve tasted fire I’m ready to come alive/I can’t just shut it up and fake that I’m alright/I’m ready now/I’m not waiting for the afterlife….I believe we start forever now.” Voor wie nog discussiëren zou willen over de basis voor dergelijke teksten, ze zijn me duidelijk. The Original hamert door en doet denken aan de Foo Fighters. The War Inside is een uitgemolken, maar o zo menselijk thema. De onrust van Foreman c.s. leidde tot een fraai opgebouwde mid-tempo song met onvermijdelijke titel Restless, inclusief half-om-half raps. Deze spoken word zang vervolgt in Blinding Light en Selling The News dat de onstilbare honger naar nieuws verwoordt: “America listens the story is told/the hard sell, all caps, all bold…begging the question mongering fears/stroking the eye and tickling ears/the truth ain’t just what it appears/we’re selling the news.” Na de constatering Suspicion is the new religion, is het kaal startende Thrive, met rauwgeschuurde strot, drums uit de doos en de Pauliaanse worsteling met het niet doen wat je graag wilt een nadenker. De rocker Dark Horses roept op te staan tegen duistere krachten in de wereld en het op te nemen voor bijvoorbeeld minderheden die niet gehoord worden.
De powerballad ballad Souvenirs, een waar rustpunt op het album, wordt gevolgd door twee laatste songs: Rise Above It met een vette knipoog naar 90’s rockbands en de semi-akoestische titeltrack, met hoop en lof aan God.Vice Verses klinkt interessanter dan Hello Hurricane (2009). Vette rock, gemaakt voor airplay en live concerten. Per luisterbeurt lijkt de kwaliteit toe te nemen. Interessant!
