Het is alweer 5 jaar sinds O How the Mighty Have Fallen en niemand zou zich verbaasd hebben, als de heren op leeftijd achter The Choir na 25+ jaar trouwe dienst aan de muziekliefhebbers hun instrumenten aan de wilgen hadden gehangen. Niets is minder waar. Het duo Derri Daugherty (zang, gitaar) en Steve Hindalong (componist, drummer, percussoinist, achtergrondzang, producer) trok met hun maten Tim Chandler (bas), Buckeye Dan Michaels (lyricon, sax) en Marc Byrd (gitaar, productie) opnieuw de studio in om ons te tracteren. “The encouragement we’ve received online and by email played a role motivating us to record again.” geven de heren aan op het begeleidend schrijven bij de CD. De opnames en mix vond in Daugherty’s Sled Dog Studio in Franklin, Tennessee plaats, terwijl de release in eigen beheer via Galaxy21 Music uitgegeven werd. Wat een hoop in de dromerige titeltrack: “I’m not a clover in the murky mire. I’m not a gold ring in the mud sadly sinking…More like a ruby-red star forever rising.” Christine Glass Byrd verzocht gloedvolle backing vocals, zoals Robin Spurs dat ten tijde van Wide-Eyed Wonder (1989) deed. Dan Michaels zachte sax en Derri’s wave riffs en Steven’s uptempo drumspel zijn de herkenbare elementen in That Melancholy Ghost, dat als een 21e eeuwse Sad Face verwoordt: “Sad child go on cry. That melancholy ghost is haunting your heart.” Onderkoelde humor in het mid-tempo Mr. Chandler over een verschrijving in een vliegticket, waardoor Tim Chandler niet zou kunnen vertrekken. Between Bare Trees is een originele vertolking van de boodschap van Prediker “And if tomorrow the sky is gray well that’s okay. Even the flowers fade for good reason. This planet turns so fast. Everything burns ashes to ash. But for now you are mine and I feel so alive.” Ter nagedachtenis aan de 29 januari 2010 overleden muzikant, producer en drijvende kracht achter de oprichting van generatiegenoot Daniel Amos (met voorman Terry Scott Taylor speelt Derri Daugherty al jaren in het side-project The Lost Dogs) Tom Howard is A Friend So Kind opgenomen. Trage, melancholische semi-akoestisch gitaarspel met Byrd’s sfeergeluiden op de achtergrond. De vallende ster Marc Byrd (1970) wordt geëerd in Legend of Old Man Byrd, opnieuw toegestane humor van zijn bandmaatjes. Meer leedvermaak in I’m Sorry I Laughed, dat overigens halverwege ook Dan Michaels’ saximprovisatie afsluiting uit Children of Time van Chase The Kangaroo laat terugkomen.
Puntscherp is The Word Inside The Word, waarin De zoon van Jahweh met een levensveranderende kracht die uit zijn woorden spreekt, ver boven de overleden Mahathma Gandhi, Mohammed, boeddha en Martin Luther King Jr. wordt gesteld. “The message is not a curse” eindigt in dit liedje om als keerzijde “The self-appointed judge of your own orientation. I studied law at the blind man’s school of cruel indoctrination” terug te komen in It Should’ve Been Obvious. Heerlijke herkenning in Invisible met de sound van Speckled Bird (1994). Say Goodbye to Neverland is heuse pianoballad, de eerste in The Choir’s geschiedenis, gecombineerd met percussie, zoals je dat op At The Foot Of The Cross (1991) hoort en een textuele knipoog naar de Neverland studios van Daugherty waar sinds Chase The Kangaroo tot en met O How The Mighty Have Fallen albums werden opgenomen. Teren op het verleden is geen optie: “No, you can’t return to innocence.” Bedankt voor de tractatie!

June, 2010 – Nashville, TN – Making it an even dozen, iconic indie rock act The Choir announces the release of their 12th studio disc, Burning Like the Midnight Sun, on June 29th. Produced by band members Steve Hindalong and Derri Daughtery, the album was recorded and mixed at Daugherty’s Sled Dog Studio in Franklin, Tenn., and will be released on the band’s own Galaxy21 Music label.
Boasting a history that spans nearly three decades, The Choir features founders Hindalong and Daugherty along with long time members Dan Michaels and Tim Chandler, and once again Marc Byrd who produced the band’s ’05 release O How the Mighty Have Fallen. This critically-acclaimed lineup continues to garner praise and accolades – including a Grammy nod — long after most other bands have burned out or faded away.
“Perhaps more than any other album by The Choir, Burning Like the Midnight Sun integrates the musical personalities of all five individuals,” Hindalong says. “The recording process was smooth and satisfying. We’re thrilled to offer it to our listening friends.”
In recent months, the band has given fans a peek inside the recording process by releasing a series of “in the studio” videos online. The finished product, Burning Like the Midnight Sun, will be available physically online through www.thechoir.net and sold at live shows. It will also be available for download & streaming on iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster and other digital service providers.
Always the innovators, the band continues to find new ways to get their music to the masses. Their die-hard fan base has already responded enthusiastically to pre-order packages that include a “director’s cut” audio interview CD, mix stems so fans can create their own productions of the songs that the band will post and share online, as well as a VIP gathering at Michaels’ Nashville home featuring an acoustic concert, swim party and barbecue.
Complementing this beautiful new music is a cover image by New Orleans-based visual artist R.R. Lyon, known for using salvaged or reclaimed pieces of his own art that he re-contextualizes to give new purpose.
