Formatted after his rediscovered his granddad’s Basic Field Manual on Jungle Warfare (dated December 15, 1941), Cunningham re-used its principles and lessons for modern era christian businessmen. Each day het touches a prescription from the old manual, quotes some relevant Bible verses and applies the battlefield lesson to your spiritual life and impact for today’s business. There’s place left to record your own reflections and prayers. Subjects like commitment, trust in God’s provision, communication, battle for souls, quenching living water and discipline are covered. However, not everything is worked out well-balanced. “Your physical health is a direct reflection of whether or not you believe God is really living inside of you.” (Day Nine) Are physical health issues really a sign of non-belief? Oops.
After the 22-days reading plan, a second part of the book answers tough questions like What do I do with success? How can I learn to work hard or stay motivated? Is it okay to ask God for courage and sales? and What to do when I get depressed or burned-out? Again, Cunningham shows some disputable theological claims. What os a Christian to do with the competition is answered by quoting Psalm 3 en Romans 8:31, as if a competitor is a real enemy, not a fellow sales man, created by God too (and maybe a Christian with this manual on his bookshelf too). Business men or employees in general can find lots of good practices in this manual, though the overwhelming amount of battlefield references need to be balanced somehow. Reading Larry Burkett‘s Business by the Book may do that trick.
